Innovators in digital displays – Why Videri chose SoC technology over 13 years ago

The origin of the Videri Digital Canvas is unique. It was first inspired by artist, Henning Lohner, a well-known German American composer, artist, and filmmaker, and founder of a global digital art marketplace. 13 years ago, he was searching for a digital “canvas” on which to display digital art. The vision was for the display to hang like a picture in the homes of his audience. Around that objective, the Videri Digital Canvas was conceived.

So, what was the connection between these artistic beginnings and SoC technology? A straight line. In early discussions around the product, it was clear that to produce the aesthetic of a framed picture, the Canvas needed to have its own way to download and show images and video without the need for an external player or lots of interface cables. In other words, it needed SoC and all of the capabilities that provides (microprocessor, memory, input/output interfaces and more).

With SoC technology being used so successfully in mobile phones and tablets, the obvious solution was for Videri to pioneer using SoC technology in digital displays – even though it was not on the radar for other manufacturers at the time. And most of them are still trying to catch up.

Why?

This consolidation of components offered several critical advantages for the Videri Canvas, including reduced power consumption, smaller (self-contained) form factor, improved performance.

“We needed an all-in-one solution. SoC displays integrate the media player functionality directly into the Videri Canvas, eliminating the need for a separate media player box, reducing hardware costs and simplifying installations,” says Mike Ungerleider, Videri’s VP of Technical Sales.

Essentially, the SoC is the brain of the Videri Canvas that handles all the computational tasks. Everything from managing the Android operating system, to enabling schedule, to detecting when the Cavas powers off. “SoCs connect to other components too, such as cameras, RAM, flash storage, and much more. Using SoC enabled us to provide the sleek, flush-mounted Canvas design that we were looking for, but also the flexibility to deliver scheduling and management features that were previously unheard of in the market,” says Ungerleider.

The Benefits.

The benefits of SoC technology in our Videri Canvases (and why our competitors are trying too hard to catch up) are many:

·       Fewer points of failure make it easier to manage and install.

·       Self-contained with a single power cable for a streamlined visual.

·       Optimizes content playback.

·       Enables built-in features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and scheduling capabilities.

·       Simplifies content management.

·       Lowers power consumption, with no heat emission.

·       Easier to scale.

Sustainable.

By eliminating the need for separate chips, the power required for inter-chip communication is reduced, leading to improved energy efficiency. Furthermore, the compact size of SoC led to the development of smaller, more portable hardware that requires fewer resources to install and get up and running quickly3.

Digital Poster.

SoC technology not only lent itself to the sleek, stunning yet simple design of Videri Canvases, to achieve Videri’s mandate, but it also greatly appealed to one of the largest global beverage brands who learned about the technology and quickly made Videri Canvases part of their global footprint in bars and retail locations. The rest, as they say, is history. Today our customers use Videri Canvases in limitless ways across multiple industries, including as a modern replacement for printed posters – for which traditional digital is too clunky and complex.

Another significant benefit of using SoC technology is that it allows Videri to add technology quickly. A great example is that the Spark2 will be our first LTE enabled Canvas. Designed for POS (point of sale) and other small-sized but high-traffic locations that need ongoing connectivity, many Videri customers are excited to get their hands on this fully connected digital display.

If you’ve been looking for something different, or digital displays that look like art canvases and can be put in locations where traditional displays cannot, than look no further than Videri. If you want displays that use less energy and resources, we’ve got you covered. And the Videri Platform includes easy-to-use content and device management software that makes designing, printing and shipping out posters ancient history.

Edge-Lit TVs are on the hot seat. How does Videri keep its cool?

In a recent study by RTING, edge-lit TVs were identified as prone to significant durability issues due to concentrated heat which caused “uniformity problems” such as warped reflector sheets, cracked light guide plates, and burnt-out LEDs. The study concluded that these TVs posed a significant risk to long-term reliability. When it comes to thin digital displays, heat dissipation is paramount to the longevity of the product. No one knows that better than Omar Barake, SVP of Hardware and Engineering at Videri. We asked him how Videri kept its cool.
